The African Iagalagana Mumuye Carved Wood Statue (also known as lagana, jagana, or supa) is a highly celebrated form of tribal ritual sculpture created by the Mumuye people of northeastern Nigeria along the Benue River valley. Renowned in the global art world for their bold, abstract treatment of the human form, these statues are famous for their masterful use of negative space between the arms and the torso. Historically overlooked by Western collectors until the late 1960s, they were frequently misattributed to the neighboring Chamba people before their distinct artistic style was recognized.
