Traditional female figurative carvings from the Luguru people of eastern Tanzania are highly stylized sculptural masterpieces. Deeply connected to the matrilineal heritage of the region, these figures are most famously known as mwana hiti (meaning "child of wood" or "wooden child" in various coastal Tanzanian Bantu languages).
