The Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), also widely known as black gum, sour gum, and pepperidge, is a remarkable native North American tree celebrated for its brilliant autumn foliage and its ecological value to pollinators and wildlife.

Growth Habit: Young trees typically have a pyramidal shape with a straight trunk and horizontal branches that extend at roughly 90-degree angles. As they mature, they often develop a more rounded or irregular crown and can reach heights of 30 to 60 feet (or occasionally up to 100 feet in the wild).
