The Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is one of the most iconic and ecologically important trees in western North America. Despite its common name, it is not a true fir, nor is it a pine or a spruce; it belongs to its own genus, Pseudotsuga (which means "false hemlock"). These are massive, long-lived evergreen conifers. Coast Douglas firs can reach heights of over 250–300 feet. They are known for their conical shape when young, often developing a cylindrical crown with age.
