From the Mende People of Sierra Leone. The exact origins of these figures are somewhat mysterious. Evidence suggests they predate the arrival of Europeans in the 15th and 16th centuries. Historically, they were found by local farmers in their fields and were often re-discovered and incorporated into agricultural rituals, where they were revered as "Rice Gods" meant to ensure a bountiful harvest.
