Mawana Hiti is a traditional carved wooden figure created by the Zaramo and Kwere peoples of coastal Tanzania. The term Mawana Hiti translates literally to "child of wood". Despite often being called "dolls" in casual or commercial contexts, these figures play significant, complex roles in the spiritual and social lives of these communities.
