Appears genuine. Approx. 16" Length, 9" x 3.25" blade.
Anthropomorphic female axes, or "prestige axes," among the Lwena (also spelled Luena) and neighboring Chokwe peoples of Angola, Zambia, and the DRC are highly stylized status symbols rather than weapons. Featuring delicately carved wooden female heads or full figures at the handle finial, they were carried by chiefs and female elders during rituals, dances, and boys' circumcision ceremonies (mukanda) to denote authority, fertility, and prestige.
