Baule hyena masks are rare zoomorphic (animal-shaped) African ritual carvings originating from the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire. While the neighboring Bamana people of Mali are historically much more famous for their prominent hyena (Suruku) masks used in Kore initiation rituals, the Baule also carve distinct hyena masks for their own complex sacred ceremonies. In Baule culture, these masks invoke the predator’s cunning, strength, and spiritual power to serve as guardians against malevolent forces.
