The African Bembe butende (or emangungu) and Elanda masks are rare ritual wooden objects from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Associated with male circumcision rites and secret societies like Bwami and Elanda, these zoomorphic masks feature large, owl-like eyes highlighted with white kaolin clay and were used during initiations and periods of forest seclusion.
