In the traditional art of the Fon people of the historic Kingdom of Dahomey (located in modern-day Republic of Benin), the lion is a paramount royal symbol representing power, military might, and leadership. It is most famously associated with King Glele, who ruled from 1858 to 1889 and chose the lion (Kini Kini) as his royal emblem.
