The Kota people of Gabon in Central Africa are historically renowned for their highly abstract, geometric wood and metal sculptures rather than wearable face masks. Traditionally, their most famous creations are Mbulu Ngulu (reliquary guardian figures), which consist of a flat, stylized wooden head encased in hammered copper or brass sheets and wires, attached to a diamond-shaped base. However, in modern African art and contemporary wall decor markets, artisans carve beautiful decorative face masks inspired by traditional Kota abstraction, often utilizing rich regional hardwoods like African Mahogany.
