A Greek hand-carved holy bread seal (known in Greek as a sfendamnos or sfragida) is an intricately carved wooden stamp used in Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition to imprint sacred symbols onto prosphoro (the liturgical offering bread). The most highly valued seals are meticulously hand-carved out of durable woods like beech, pear, or walnut by monastics, particularly the fathers of [Mount Athos, Greece](1.3.1, 1.4.9). The deep, mirror-image engravings serve as a precise map for the priest during the Proskomedia (service of preparation).
