The African Carved Wood Baule Lawle Gong Beater is a highly symbolic ritual instrument from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast. Known natively as a lawle or lawre waka, these specialized mallets are crafted explicitly for Komien (professional spirit mediums) to strike flat, flanged iron gongs during sacred divination ceremonies.The repetitive, rhythmic ringing of the gong induced by the lawle helps the diviner enter and sustain a deep trance state. While possessed, the medium communicates with nature spirits (asye usu) to prescribe vital psychological and physical remedies for the community.Several fine, hand-carved examples complete with custom display stands are available from specialized galleries and premier collections:
